Publish with Ancient Arts!

Ancient Arts Yarns is pleased to collaborate with independent international knit and crochet designers to publish our in-house patterns. We have periodic calls for submissions for our collections, but we also sometimes publish individual patterns at various points throughout the year. Our designs are available in retail online, as well as both retail and wholesale printed format. With well over two hundred colours and a large array of high quality base yarns, Ancient Arts Yarn is an ideal choice for pattern designs.

As we have a rolling call date, we will do our best to work with you to establish a realistic due date for the completion of the pattern and sample to fit your schedule. Ancient Arts Yarn will provide the yarn for the sample garment. We do try to work with your yarn and colour preferences. While we will use our best efforts to accommodate a designer’s preference for colour and weight of yarn, the final choice does rest with us.

Ancient Arts Yarns holds exclusive rights to the design for one year after publication, after which the rights revert to you, with some exceptions. We offer competitive rates and we pay promptly and fairly upon receipt of the pattern and knitted sample. We keep the knitted sample for use at trade shows, trunk shows, etc., which means you have ongoing promotion of your design and personal brand. We will promote your design in our newsletter and on social media, and your name is always prominently displayed on the patterns and in promotional materials.

Your pattern design will be professionally tech edited and the sample will be professionally photographed. At the end of our exclusive period, upon request, we will send you our photos and tech edited pattern for your own use should you wish to sell and/or publish the pattern yourself.

If you are interested in designing for our in-house line of patterns, we would be more than pleased to hear about your submission! We love to see designs that excite you, and that you are passionate about. No matter what your level of design experience is, we are always interested in hearing from you.

Requirements for proposals:

Submissions should not be under submission elsewhere nor previously published, and should include the following:

  • Your name, contact information, and where your work can be found (for instance, a link to your designer page on Ravelry, your website, or other social media).
  • A proposal indicating the details of construction, features, patterns, sizing, and other highlights of your idea.
  • An image of a good-sized swatch (which needn’t be in the requested yarn, but a good match for structure and fibre type is helpful).
  • Information on stitch and row/round gauge for your proposed project, requested colour(s) and quantity of yarn that would be needed for the project.
  • A sketch to show us your idea as it would be worn, and, for garments, please also include a schematic to demonstrate the proposed proportions and sizes.

Please send your submission in PDF format to our design coordinator, Jessie McKitrick, using the web form below.
