Call for Designer Submissions - Evening Elegance Winter 2024

Call issued February 21, 2024 - submissions due March 15, 2024

Ancient Arts Yarns is seeking 5-7 designs for a new collection in our Little Nettle Soft Fingering and Nettle Soft DK custom yarns. The collection theme is Evening Elegance, and we are looking for elegant and timeless garments and shawls which would be perfect for a memorable night out, formal Christmas parties, a trip to the theatre, or a special date night. These designs should include embellishments to give these knit pieces a little something extra, such as lace inserts and details, ruffle edgings, precious tiny buttons, tucks, or folds to create drama, or subtle embroidered details.
The colour palette for this collection includes deep jewel tones, which are given a sheen and softness of tone by the Nettle Soft bases. Although we are looking for knit pieces, designs may include a small crochet element. We invite you to think creatively and would love to see a designer incorporate both yarn weights into a single piece! Please refer to our mood board to get a sense of the style, mood and details we want to include in this collection.

Design Elements

Garments – blouses, cap-sleeved tees, tanks, light cardigans, shawls, and wraps.

Embellishment Details – tucks, lace edgings and inserts, embroidery, ruffles, tiny buttons.

Descriptors – elegant, sexy, classic, sophisticated, festive.

Colours – Preference would be single colour with possible colour accents.

About the Yarn: Our custom Nettle Soft blend is a unique and eco-friendly blend of Fine Merino and Nettle plant fibre, which results in a yarn that will give your garment beautiful drape, lustre, and stitch definition. Fine merino creates a yarn that is soft and lofty yarn and dyes in beautiful colours. Nettle is a fair trade sustainable and eco-conscious plant fibre extracted from the Giant Himalayan Stinging Nettle plant. Its long white fibres are linen-like, soft, and shine like silk. Nettle is also anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral, and adds strength and blocking ability to yarn, helping to preserve the shaping of the garments. The nettle fibres do not accept dye, and this results in a lovely soft heathering effect to colours.

  • A proposal indicating the details of construction, features, patterns, sizing, and other highlights of your idea.
  • An image of a good-sized swatch (which needn’t be in the requested yarn, but that suggests the proposed item).
  • Information on stitch and row/round gauge for your proposed project, suggested colour(s) and quantity of yarn that would be needed for the project.
  • A sketch to show us your idea as it would be worn, and, for garments, please include a schematic to demonstrate the proposed proportions and sizes.

If you are looking for more precise rates for a specific idea you have in mind, please feel free to email for more details. Since we are designers ourselves, we completely understand the challenges of such work and want to be as fair as possible. Please note that while these rates are listed in CAD, we can convert to other currencies as the designer requests. Exchange on non-Canadian dollar payments will be calculated on the day of payment. We pay promptly upon receipt of the pattern and knitted sample. Ancient Arts Yarns will provide the yarn for the sample, accommodating colour preferences whenever possible.

Following the exclusivity period, our tech edited pattern and photos are available for your use upon request. We retain the knitted sample for promotional use and ensure your name is always prominently displayed on patterns and in promotional materials.
