May 2024 - O'Keeffe: Light of Iris (1924)
Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) stands as an iconic figure in American art, celebrated for her pioneering and modernist vision that spanned an amazing seven decades. Often called the "Mother of American Modernism," O'Keeffe's legacy of dramatic and innovative artwork is transcended by her famed independent spirit and for her role as a trailblazing female role model.
O'Keefe's body of work has distinct phases, although throughout her career, she remained largely independent of major art movements. Beginning with exquisite charcoal drawings and watercolors, O'Keeffe's artistic evolution led her to meticulously paint irises and lilies on expansive canvases, imbuing the details of these natural forms with an abstract allure that captivated viewers, evoking both wonder and intense emotional responses. Over a brief span, she created a remarkable 200 flower paintings, including the evocative "Light of Iris" (1924), which serves as our inspiration for June's Colour of the Month.
