Colour of the Month Theme for 2024 - Flowers in Artwork
August 2024 - Klimt: Bauerngarten (1907)
Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was an Austrian Symbolist painter, primarily noted for his allegorical works and female portraits. However, from 1890 onwards, Klimt became increasingly interested in landscape painting. Klimt was inspired both by Van Gogh’s use of intense colours and pure paint thickly applied, as well as the Japanese style of painting flowers. Bauerngarten (1907) is a perfect example of the use of tight perspective and thicker brushwork when applying the paint. The close-up of the flower garden shows the viewer Klimt’s love of pattern and design, as well as a looser style of painting. The flowers are arranged in a pyramid and play with the complementary effect of green and orange/red, and the patch of blue flowers near the centre of the garden acts as a focal point that leads the eye to the centre of the garden.
