North Sea Collection Part 3 |
| Ancient Arts Fibre Crafts is all about the timeless connection between the past and present, weaving early textile traditions into our modern yarn creations. We have a deep appreciation for heritage sheep breeds, recognizing their role in preserving history and biodiversity. Our commitment lies in crafting eco-friendly, heritage-breed-specific yarns that carry this rich heritage forward, and this is reflected in our newest offering, The North Sea Collection, which features Herlig DK (50% Viking Norway wool, 50% Cruelty Free Merino).
Norwegian wool, cultivated since Viking times, boasts warmth, strength, and incredible comfort. The sheep are deeply ingrained in Norwegian culture, so much so that they are simply known as "white" sheep. They lead a natural mountain life, making Norwegian wool a prime example of an eco-friendly textile fiber. Our Norwegian wool comes from Viking Norway, where a cooperative ensures every step of processing is eco-friendly, preserving the wool's exceptional qualities. To enhance its softness, we blend it with cruelty-free merino wool. The result is a yarn that shines with lustre, beauty, and durability. Thanks to these qualities Herlig DK pairs perfectly with our Lascaux DK yarn, which also uses wool that also has deep historic roots, and you'll find both in The North Sea Collection.
In this Scandinavian-themed collection, we celebrate Scandinavian knitting traditions, drawing inspiration from Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Icelandic, Finnish, and Faroese influences. Our talented designers have embraced these traditions to create stunning patterns that showcase our yarns. This collection is divided into three captivating themes: Ship and Sea, Shore and Sand, and Home and Hearth. It's a showcase of vibrant colorwork, combining traditional and modern techniques, elegant textures, and beautiful cables. We hope these designs not only capture your imagination but also become a source of inspiration for your knitting projects! |

Bergen Cardigan by Evelyn Siatra
| The Bergen Cardigan is a stunning creation that beautifully combines Scandinavian motifs with a touch of Fair Isle knitting influence. This design was born out of a desire to adorn a simple, wearable shape with intricate all-over patterning featuring gorgeous colourwork motifs. The cardigan boasts a comfortable, relaxed fit with modified drop shoulder sleeves. The button bands and neckband are skillfully worked in corrugated ribbing, adding a distinctive texture to the piece. Even the hems and cuffs are adorned with the same corrugated ribbing, creating a harmonious and intricate look. It's truly a masterpiece that brings together the best of Scandinavian and Fair Isle knitting traditions. |

Jorvik Vest by Ciara Doyle |
| The Jorvik Vest is a unisex design that draws inspiration from the rich heritage of Jorvik, a Viking settlement known for it's history and cultural significance. This vest is perfect for adding an extra layer of warmth on a chilly winter's day. The design is heavily influenced by Aran style knitting, which is renowned for its intricate and traditional background stitches. In the Jorvik Vest pattern, these background stitches take center stage, with subtle cables used as decorative borders.
A unique aspect of this design is how it brings what are often background elements into the foreground. This artistic approach results in a pattern that is ideal for showcasing a stand-out yarn, making it truly one of a kind. The Jorvik Vest is crafted from the bottom up in a single piece, and separated at the underarm to work the fronts and backs separately. The button band and sleeve bands are cleverly integrated and worked along with the main piece, ensuring a cohesive and visually appealing garment. |

Rising Steam Stole Pattern
| | |
This rectangular double-knit stole is inspired by the traditional Japanese Tatewaku (Rising Steam) pattern, in which the steam gently rises illustrating subtle curves. In Scandinavia, experiencing saunas and hot springs is revered and of extreme importance, fitting perfectly with the use of the rising steam motif.
This stole uses a captivating interplay of 10 colours, using Herlig DK and Lascaux DK yarn in pairs, spanning the full spectrum of colours. It showcases the remarkable versatility and beauty of these yarns. Additionally, the pattern uses 80% of the total yarn quantity, allowing you to create a matching skinny scarf using any remaining yarn. You can achieve this by reducing the number of chart repeats from 8 down to 2.

Borre Shawl by Camilyn Crane |
The Borre Shawl is inspired by a dramatic style of early Norse art which is characterized by a range of geometric interlaced knot patterns and zoomorphic (single animal) motifs. This style prevailed in Scandinavia from the late 9th through to the late 10th centuries and draws its name from a group of gilt-bronze harness mounts recovered from a ship grave in Borre mound cemetery near the village of Borre, Vestfold, Norway.
This shawl has beautiful winding cables on a simple background, just like Borre artwork, and will keep you warm on the coldest of winter days, and the darkest of winter nights.

The Edda features a highly visible jacquard-striped pattern reminiscent of the intricate storytelling found in the ancient Norse Eddas. Just as the Eddas are filled with rich narratives and vibrant characters, the Edda cardigan weaves a compelling tale through its design.
The V-neck button fronts not only add a touch of classic elegance but also provide versatility in adjusting your comfort level. Lined pockets offer a practical element, ensuring your hands stay cozy during the chilly winter months. The modified drop shoulder construction is a testament to thoughtful design, making this cardigan not only stylish but exceptionally comfortable.
Wearing the Edda cardigan is like wrapping yourself in a warm, visual narrative - a perfect companion for the heart of winter, just as the Eddas themselves have warmed the hearts of those who appreciate ancient storytelling and fine craftsmanship.
