UNDERSTANDING YOUR YARN: A THREE PART ZOOM SERIES

If unraveling the mysteries behind your yarn's behavior piques your interest, don't miss this chance to delve into the world of fibers with us!

Meet the Fibre Friday Teachers!

Are you intrigued by the class descriptions? Longmont Yarn Shoppe is hosting a FREE Meet the Teacher Zoom session next Wednesday, January 10th at 6 pm Eastern (4 pm MST). This is your chance to meet all the instructors, including Caroline, for the Fiber Friday series. Ask them questions, get insights into supplies, and learn about the essential skills needed for a successful experience. Don't miss this valuable opportunity to connect and prepare for an enriching learning journey!

As an added bonus, participants in the Meet the Teacher Zoom will receive a price break on the classes if they sign up within 24 hours of the Zoom event!

UNDERSTANDING YOUR YARN

Each class is a One Time Zoom eventat 6pm Eastern, 5pm Central, 4pm Mountain, and 3pm Pacific time and is recorded. Students will be sent the recording within 24 hours of the class and have access to view the recording for one week.

Part 1: Fibre Content in Yarns - March 1, 2024

Master your projects in knitting, crocheting, or weaving by understanding the critical role of fibre content. We'll explore diverse fibres worldwide, from wool and silk to linen, cotton, and man-made options like viscose. Knowing your fibre's characteristics will help you choose the right fibre for your project.

Part 2: Yarn Structure & How it Shapes Your Project -
March 8th, 2024

In this class we will explore how yarns are made, while taking a deep dive into yarn structures. Yarn structure dictates how a yarn works up, as well as its durability, drape, gauge, and character.

Part 3: Colour & Yarn -
March 15th, 2024

Colour is a subject that can be challenging to approach when faced with the vast selections of colours available to the modern stitcher. In this class we will examine the various styles of hand dyed yarn and how each dye style behaves when knit or crocheted. This class will give students the tools and know-how to confidently choose colours and put them together for the perfect project!

Weaving in Ends Technique Class

The third in Caroline's Techniques classes will teach you how to give your project the best possible finish. The final step of any project is to weave in any remaining yarn ends to keep your stitches from unravelling and your work smooth and well finished. There are many techniques available and this class will explore the most useful options plus give you plenty of tips and tricks (like how to keep those rascally ends from popping loose) to make them work better. We’ll also cover how to decide where and when to use these techniques, based on the type of stitch where the ends must be woven in, as well as the type of construction of your project.

Wet Felting Level 1: Make a Felted Vessel

Wet felting is a versatile and ancient textile technique that involves the interlocking and matting of wool fibers to create a solid and cohesive fabric. The process is initiated by saturating raw wool with hot water and soap, followed by agitating, rolling, or rubbing the fibers together. The combination of heat, moisture, and friction causes the wool scales to open up and intertwine, eventually forming a sturdy felted material.

Whether you're a seasoned fiber artist or a beginner exploring the world of textiles, wet felting offers a unique and rewarding medium for creative expression, allowing individuals to transform raw wool into functional and aesthetically pleasing works of art.

Discover the art of wet felting on a resist in our workshop, how to enhance your creation by incorporating non-wool embellishments, and learning how to determine the precise moment when the felt reaches its finished size.

Unlock the artistry of felted luxury in our Fine Merino and Silk Fiber Cowl Workshop! Experience the joys of working with wool and silk fiber art as you create a stunning cowl from scratch. This hands-on experience will guide you through the intricate process of basic fiber layout and introduce the fascinating technique of using a resist to fashion a seamless fabric tube. You will also learn to hand-paint/dye and heat-set your felted cowl to ensure your artwork remains vivid and permanent.

Build your skills, embrace the beauty of fine fibers, and leave with a one-of-a-kind cowl that reflects your unique artistic expression!

Wet Felting Level 3: Make a Felted Japanese Knot Bag

The Japanese Knot Bag is a very popular style of project bag that is often used by crafters while they are on the move. It features a long strap on one side and a short strap on the other , and the long strap is slipped through the short strap to form a handle and close the bag.

In this workshop we will be taking our skills to the next level. We’ll learn how to do an even wool layout and to make a seamless bag using a resist. Then we will explore options for embellishing the bag to make it a unique piece of functional art!

Previous felt working experience recommended.
