Colour of the Month Theme for 2026 - Children's Literature

August 2026 - Where the Wild Things Are

Our August Colour of the Month is inspired by Where the Wild Things Are written and illustrated by American author and illustrator Maurice Sendak. Sendak won the annual Caldecott Medal from the children's librarians in 1964, recognizing Where the Wild Things Are as the previous year's "most distinguished American picture book for children". It has since been voted the number one picture book multiple times for it's beautiful artwork.

The book focuses on a young boy named Max who, dressed up in his favourite wolf suit, is inspired by the wolf and proceeds to create so much havoc through his household that he is sent to bed without his supper. Max's bedroom then transforms into a jungle environment, and he winds up sailing to an island inhabited by monsters, called the Wild Things. The Wild Things try to scare Max, but much to their surprise are not successful. Max becomes the king of the Wild Things once he has intimidated them and he enjoys a playful romp with his subjects. Finally, Max stops the game and sends them to bed without their supper. However, to the Wild Things' dismay, he starts to feel lonely and decides to abdicate and return home. The monsters do not want Max to go, and they throw themselves into fits of rage as he calmly sails home. Upon returning to his bedroom, Max discovers a hot supper waiting for him.

Our suggested pairings for August include Secret Agent, Chili Pepper Chocolate, Lodgepole Pine, and Into Deep Water.

After that period, and up to one year from the shipment date, returns are eligible for exchange or store credit/gift card only.
