The Journey Shawl by Caroline Sommerfeld
Featured in Vogue Knitting Fall 2020: The Makers!
This shawl is very personal for me as it’s a retrospective of my knitting career and my career as a dyer! The stitches used in this shawl symbolize my various interests in knitting including texture, lace, cables, and stranding. I chose to use the ones that I personally enjoy the most, with each block and section representing a different time period in my knitting, and the various techniques I’ve learned along the way. The shawl also symbolizes who I am as a dyer since I prefer to work with primary colours in natural tones. Black and brown are included in this shawl as they are important to a dyer in achieving subtle and beautiful colours. The yarn I chose is one I designed myself, and together with the techniques and colours I used, this shawl brings both ancient and modern sheep together in a design that uses both old and new styles of knitting! It’s meant to be my tribute to a life time of knitting and colour, and is intended to feel like a big warm hug when you wear it. - CS
