Colour of the Month Theme for 2026 - Children's Literature
July 2026 - Black Beauty
Our July Colour of the Month is inspired by Black Beauty, by Anna Sewell a novel published in 1877. Black Beauty, is the only novel by Anna Sewell and was the first major animal story published in children’s literature. It was composed in the last years of her life, during which she remained in her house as an invalid. The novel became an immediate best-seller, with Sewell dying just five months after its publication, but living long enough to see her only novel become a success. With fifty million copies sold, Black Beauty is one of the best-selling books of all time and has been published in many editions.
Black Beauty was not originally written for children, but it quickly became an important work for children, as the author wrote it “to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding of the treatment of horses” and other animals, as well as people, These are all important lessons for children! It is told as an autobiography narrated by a horse named Black Beauty, and follows him from his carefree early days as a foal, through hardships as a working horse in the crowded, frosty streets of London, to eventual retirement. He passes through the hands of owners such as the kind Squire Gordon, the principled Jeremiah Barker, and the exploitive Nicholas Skinner. Throughout his tale are woven the experiences of his friend Ginger, who experiences the worst of humanity's unkindness. Through the horse's perspective, the story reveals both cruelty and kindness in the treatment of animals, and glimpses into the best and the worst of human nature. Each chapter presents moral lessons about compassion and respect, not only toward horses but toward all beings.
