Spindle Spinning a Yarn: its Legacy in Art, Literature, and Culture (Or How the Spindle Shaped the Western World!)

This lecture will look at the history of yarn and spindle spinning and how this craft has been an integral force in the formation of western society, including gender roles, art forms, and societal values. We will visit archaeological evidence about spindles and how they were (and are) used in the crafting of yarn and then look at how spinning and the use of yarn became an integral part of social forms in the western world. We’ll start with Philosophy via Plato and continue on to looking at how spinning and textile production in the Greek and Roman worlds came to shape values, gender roles, and artistic conventions. These eras left their mark in the Middle Ages, and we will see how this history of spinning and yarn continues to be a subtle but still very present part of our own culture and values.

Our fantastic and amazing customer service person Noelle was denied government funding for her upcoming semesters at school and since she has spent her life helping others (did you know she was a paramedic?) we want to help her out! As a result, we've decided to put together an amazing evening of entertainment and yarny goodness with all proceeds going to her. This night is not an evening to be missed, with treats, limited edition yarn, and so much more. Exclusive limited edition yarn bases and a custom colourway will also be available for purchase with all profits going to Noelle and her schooling.

We offer a one-year return and exchange policy from the date of shipment. We know knitting and crochet projects often unfold over time, and a shorter return window doesn’t always make sense.

Returns requested within the timeframe permitted by the original payment method (typically up to 90 days, and in some cases up to 120 days) are eligible for a refund to the original method of payment. After that period, and up to one year from the shipment date, returns are eligible for exchange or store credit/gift card only.

To be eligible for a return or exchange, yarn must be in original condition with labels intact, and be scent- and smoke-free. Please note that shipping fees are non-refundable.

Please note that our prices for customers in the USA include tariffs which have been paid on your behalf at time of import, in the event this product is returned or exchanged any tariffs paid are not available for refund or credit towards exchange yarn.
