This elegant yet easy pattern brings the beauty of traditional Orenburg lace together with a contemporary shawlette form. It is ideal for showing off your best luxury yarns, or your favourite sock/fingering weight yarns. It can be knit using one skein of most fingering weight yarns.
This versatile pattern can also be made very lacy by using a lace weight yarn, or thick and warm by using a sport weight yarn (additional yarn may be required if you choose this option).
Measures 60’ x 10’, after blocking.
1 skein Ancient Arts 100% Organic Merino 4 ply (sock) yarn or
1 skein Ancient Arts 100% Superwash BFL 4 ply (sock) yarn or
1 skein Ancient Arts 75% Merino 25% Silk 4 ply (sock) yarn or
2 skeins Ancient Arts 70% Cashmere / 30% Silk 4 ply yarn
Size 7 (4.5 mm) 24” or longer circular (cir) for working shawl. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
In garter st, 22 sts and 42 rows = 4” (10 cm) before blocking
Notes about knitting:
This shawlette is worked in three separate stages. First, the bottom lace border is knit. Second, stitches are picked up along one side of the border and then the main body of the shawl is knit using short rows to shape. Finally, the top border is knit onto the stitches of the main body and thus there is almost no binding off required!
Note about yarn:
Orenburg Rhapsody works well with any fingering or sock weight yarn, and makes a garment that can be worn as a narrow shawlette or as a scarf. The pattern can alternately be knit using a lace weight yarn in order to get a more lacy effect in the shawl. If using a finer yarn, you will need to use 4.5mm needles or the size of the final garment will be affected. If you are concerned about changing the size of the shawl by changing the yarn, a heavy lace yarn is recommended since this will least affect the size of the garment.
