      Meow Yarn Collection

Ancient Arts Fibre Crafts is proud to present our  Meow Yarn Collection!

Ancient Arts has partnered with the Meow Foundation in Canada and Best Friends Animal Society in the USA, and for every skein of yarn that is sold from this collection, we will make a donation to benefit stray and abandoned cats in need. You can be a part of this effort by purchasing yarn, and by learning more about the Meow Foundation and Best Friends and the important work they do in our communities.

DID YOU KNOW?

Approximately 67% of households in North America have at least one companion pet. However, an estimated 6-8 million cats and dogs enter US shelters each year, and of these 3-4 million are euthanized each year (The Humane Society of the United States, 2012). Numbers are proportionately similar in Canada, with an estimated 1.1 million cats (who are the most neglected, most numerous, and most euthanized companion animal in North America) brought to Canadian shelters in 2011. If these cats, nearly half were euthanized due to a lack of space/resources to care for them, or due to illness (CFHS Cats in Canada Report 2012).

Non-profit groups such as MEOW Foundation in Canada, and Best Friends Animal Society in the US, are working to end feline and canine homelessness by eliminating the use of euthanasia as a means of population control, and instead are promoting and educating the public on the use of alternatives (see below). The Meow Foundation, based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, has helped more than 14,000 local cats and kittens since 2000. Best Friends Animal Society, based in Kanab, Utah, USA, has 900+ partners around the US all working together to end the problem of companion animal euthanasia. Thanks to this partnership 331,000 cats and dogs have been adopted across Utah by shelters and coalition members since 2000.

PROGRAMS OUR CHARITIES PROMOTE

Rescue and Adoption

Rescue and Adoption Programs care for and re-home stray and abandoned cats and dogs. Animals admitted to these programs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped for permanent ID, and given shelter at adoption centres or in a foster home, while waiting for their forever homes.

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)

TNR programs are specifically designed to assist feral cats who do not have the level of socialization necessary for adoption into homes. Cats in these programs are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, microchipped, and returned to their neighbourhoods. Trained community caregivers provide them with the essentials necessary for survival outdoors.

Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP)

SNAP programs subsidize the cost of feline spay/neuter surgeries for individuals financially in-need, and promote responsible pet ownership.

Together, these programs help reduce the number of stray and abandoned animals, while promoting responsible pet ownership. Most importantly, we’re helping create a society that values the life of every companion animal!
